Prime Minister Gordon Brown has this week announced new plans to accelerate social mobility across Britain.

In an speech which spelt out the need to develop the potential of all individuals, irrespective of their socio-economic background, Gordon Brown stated:

"The highest priority for us now as a country is that - building on our improved educational performance - we make the right decisions to accelerated social mobility in the years ahead.

The focus is not on compensating people for what they don't have, but helping people make the most of what they do have."

Some of the pilot measures include:

·     £7.6m for 30 Children's Centres across 10 Local Authorities to offer enhanced work-focused services.

·     Improved supported accomodation for teenage mothers by providing additional services to improve health and development of their children, improve their parenting skills and support them with learning.

·     At least £20m will be available through grants to local authorities to develop new and innovative approaches to tackle causes and consequences of child poverty.
